This is not to defend the situation back then, which was appalling - but does highlght out how bad things have become. The common factor is perhaps that there is a Dictator who perceives himself to be under serious threat. That highlights the need for a government that is put in by the people, and can also be removed by the people if it proves untrustworthy.

42 day detention without charge: still repressive, still unacceptable, still unnecessary

I’m not going to write much now, except to say that pushing this set of proposals through Parliament is not about the need to protect our freedom; that has been shown ad nauseam. It is about the need to protect Mr Brown’s government’s collective backside; they have painted themselves into a corner at a time when they have little political capital left and can’t afford to admit that they are wrong.
