Media Training for Young Politicos, Tory Style

One of my interests (and aims of the blog) is to encourage participation in politics as widely as possible. At least two of the three main parties have been talking about training, including media training, for younger members. The Liberal Democrats are talking about why their Leadership Academy should train everyone as they are all potential leaders.

Meanwhile, the Young Britons’ Foundation ran a training day at the Conservative Party Conference for young activists. Mike Rouse has kindly written an account for the Wardman Wire.

‘People Want to Know What Values You Bring’: Grave Dave Cameron’s Vision and Values

q-photo-david-cameron-2What makes Cameron tick? Last week I looked at the vision and values of Gordon Browns speech, now its ‘Dave’s turn. Except this was more grave than Dave. When Nick Clegg compared David Cameron to an Andrex puppy, he was partly right. Camerons speech to the Tory conference was certainly very long (65 minutes), but it certainly wasn’t soft.

(Full text of the speech is here, quotes below are in italics. )

Strangely, in pragmatic political times, we’ve had two strong ‘values’ speeches. Brown was heavy on duty, service, and especially ‘fairness’. Cameron was even more explicit:

(people) want to know whether our politics, and let’s be frank, whether our politicians - are up to it. In the end, that’s not really about your policies and your plans. Of course your plans are important… so people want to know what values you bring to big situations and big decisions that can crop up on your watch.

and so he told us. There were some clear inconsistencies between his stated values, and what he actually proposed to do, but we’ll come to that later. First I’ll have a look at the values he highlighted.

The march to being elected has now begun: Cameron’s Conference Speech by Garbo

This was impressive to watch
I have to admit, I was expecting Cameron’s speech to be high on presentation but low on content. I was expecting to be writing a review that was going to give Labour a points victory over the Tories for the conference season. I was expecting Cameron to deliver a fluffy [...]

Still a lack of coherent Tory policy talk: Conference Special by Garbo

Theresa Villiers’ transport policy announcement on rejecting a third runway at Heathrow and instead building high speed rail, as you may have gathered, has not gone down well with me at all! For some reason the Tories are linking high speed rail with Heathrow expansion when the two are unrelated. The Tories say [...]

Cameron’s keynote speech just got a whole lot harder: Conference Special by Garbo

Today is the day that David Cameron makes his keynote speech to conference. Last year it was about keeping the Tories in the game, this year it is about convincing the electorate that the Conservatives are now ready for government. It shows how much the Tories have moved on this year, but unfortunately [...]

Tory Conference? What Tory Conference?: A conference special by Garbo

Tory Conference? What Tory Conference?: A conference special by Garbo

There is usually some sort of debate this time year about who has the advantage going in to the conference season in terms of order. Every year it is the smaller parties first, such as UKIP and the sort, then the Lib Dems, followed by Labour and then concluding with the Conservatives. The [...]
