New Plaid Cymru Defence Policy: Self-Assured Destruction

“Welsh Culture Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas has resigned after claims he walked in to a pub holding a lit cigar.”
I have not been able to ascertain whether it was a trick cigar designed to explode in your face.
Eurovision Song Contest Live Blog update: Photos, sound, video
I have updated my Eurovision Song Contest live blog to include audio, video and pictures - including a long-dead of photo of Anthea “giving Brucie a twirl”, and this photo of the Greek entry doing the Birdie Song. The updated version is here.

Who made that great whooshing noise last night ….?
Let me give you a clue…
… it wasn’t Prince Philip.

Guido on Candid Camera: Theo Spark
All very heavy at the moment - let’s have a silly photo.
Theo Spark has (he says) caught Guido in a moment of relaxation (this article safe for work unless he has something I missed in the sidebar). Click through, the fur coat would make Arthur Daley proud.
Well - here’s Guido

I think that Theo may have something, but I wonder whether that chap is as dashing as the real Guido, who I still say reminds me of Zorro (obligatory link to Newsnight article):

What say you, gentle reader?

A Study in Storefront Churches in Brooklyn, New York
Rudayday did a project to photograph “storefront” churches in New York back in 2003. This article features a few photos from the collection. There are 100 in total, all hosted here.
You can read about the background to the project.
In the UK these days, we are probably more familiar with “Terraced House Mosques” than storefront churches. Most congregations that would occupy these converted stores in Brooklyn would usually be renting a church premises on a weekday evening or a Sunday afternoon in the UK - or be meeting in a school or community hall. Many churches - especially in larger cities - have a Chinese, Korean, Philippino (or even Iranian, Eritrean and Indian) speaking congregation “borrowing” the building.
Here are a few sample photos. I have gone for typical photos, rather than my favourites.

Iglesia Pentecostal - Casa Oracion (=House of Prayer)
Laos Nativity: Advent Calendar 2007 - Wardman Wire
Slightly different this morning.
Libby Purves over at the Times is running an Advent Calendar of Nativity Figures. Here’s one from Laos from a day or so ago.

For the full-size photo visit Faith Central.
In theory there is another calendar at Paperless Christmas, but that site appears to be dead this morning.

Coming soon to a town near you - Photo of the Day
Coming to a town near you soon (except that there will be a camera on it and you will have run your id card through a slot and give a DNA sample to prove you read it).
And a blunt reminder that “Peace Campaigning” without a willingness to defend ourselves is futile. And no - I don’t agree with everything it says on the website in the sign.
“In 1934 Robert Cecil planned the unofficial ‘Peace ballot’ which revealed that ten and a half million (of eleven and a half million responses) were in favour of disarmament; almost all responders were in favour of the League. Ignored by the UK government, which was embarking on a massive rearmament programme, Cecil proceeded to found the International Peace Campaign, to mobilise world-wide opinion in favour of peace through disarmament and negotiation.” (source: Peace Pledge Union)
This quote is a study in our fickleness and foolishness in the face of emotional campaigning. Fortunately he didn’t succeed. In my opinion it would have cost us our country.
