Cutty Sark: Round Up of Newspaper Coverage
These are the latest News Reports about the investigation being done at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich. The key points:
- It is not yet clear how the fire started.
- The extra cost of the restoration is likely to be £5-10 million.
- An appeal has already been launched.
Online Coverage
Daily Mail: Inside the burnt-out hull of the Cutty Sark .
Excellent photograph of bow that I can’t reproduce.
“The fire that reduced the Cutty Sark to a blackened skeleton left restoration teams, historians and generations of tourists.
Wanton vandalism or tragic accident, the explosion and two-hour blaze raised serious doubts over the future of one of Britain’s national treasures.”
Guardian: After the fire, heritage chiefs dare to hope that a treasure can be rebuilt.
Slightly over-egging the pudding. It is a clipper built out of teak by the Victorians that was on fire for less than 2 hours. Off course it can be rebuilt - if the iron didn’t shatter or melt.
Guardian - Tristram Hunt: An icon of seafaring bombast, trade and cultural exchange
“A familiar landmark on the London marathon route and a curiously enduring tourist attraction for residents and visitors alike, the Cutty Sark is little short of a national icon. More so even than HMS Victory, it opens up a history and identity that speaks powerfully to modern Britain. The ship is an unspoken part of our historic fabric whose value has resurfaced as it smoulders.”
Statements Released by Cutty Sark Trust
The Cutty Sark Trust released the following statement at 1:54pm today:
The Cutty Sark Fire Statement
From Richard Doughty,Chief Executive,Cutty Sark Trust
21st May 2007
A fire broke out this morning at 4.45am this morning at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, which was put out by the London Fire Brigade by 06.28am.
The ship was undergoing a major conservation project and everyone involved in theproject is devastated. It was a quarter of the way through and so much work has already been carried out.
A Close-Up Look at the Burnt Cutty Sark
The Greenwich Phantom lives in Greenwich, and had a careful look at the site with the journalists. There are some photos and a detailed article on the blog.
I felt physically sick as I quietly tagged on behind the media scrum that’s down there at the moment, and saw what’s left of the Cutty Sark. Even walking towards it, the lingering odour of wet smoke - a gut-churning smell that hangs around long after the fire is gone - and the delicate white ash scattered amongst the cobblestones by the market was enough to bring a tear to my eye.
There are a couple of minor inaccuracies in the story, but it is well worth a read.

Update and Roundup
The Cutty Sark Fire
These are the elements of the story as I have them:
-
The Cutty Sark has been damaged but not destroyed, and more of the fabric of the ship has been preserved than might have been expected for a night time fire in a largely wooden ship.
-
A large amount of the timber from the ship was away for restoration as part of a large conservation project.
-
All three decks are salvageable.
-
The masts, rigging, and all the fittings had been removed as part of the conservation project.
London Fire Brigade
Comments from an interview with a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade:
- The Initial call came in at 04:46.
- The first crews were on the scene at 04:50.
- There were gas cyclinders at the site, which gave initial cause for concern.
- Cylinders were not on board, but it took 45 minutes to confirm that there were no hazards to the crews.
- It took 90 minutes to bring fire under control. I am not clear yet whether that was in addition to the 45 minutes above.
Investigations
There is thought to be a strong possibility of a suspicious cause of the fire.
Wrap-up
In conclusion, it looks like quite a fortunate escape.
I will put out another roundup at 10:30am GMT, and then each hour on the hour.

Taking a break for a coffee
I’m taking a short break, but I will update this thread hourly throughout the day. In the meantime you can track the story in the RSS Feeds in the sidebar - they are mainly political but the story is already coming through.
I will do a further and more extensive roundup at 9:30am Greenwich Mean Time. Keep coming back.
I am also clearing this blog as far as possible today to stick with this story.
