New categories for Wikio UK? Starting with the “Blawgers”?
I’d like to start a debate – do we need a wider range of categories for blogs on wikio.co.uk.
I’ve been having a look at Wikio categories in other countries, (Spain, Italy, Germany, France, USA – see the right hand sidebar in each case), and the UK is unusual in having a smaller number of categories (see pic on the right).
Wikio rankings are not taken that seriously by most people, but they are a useful way of finding active blogs in each sector. Where a category does not exist, it is more hit and miss to find active blogs.
Equally, this is one way to draw attention to categories which are not well known.
I’m thinking about suggesting a wider range of categories to wikio.
What do you think?
The first new categories I’m wondering about about are Law Blogs (”Blawgs”) and “Local” Blogs – where there are a large number of good sites already established.
Which other niches could be made into Wikio categories?

Since I can’t seem to get my site accepted (though it’s all about British politics) how about an expat/offshore category?

I’m particularly interested in the locality of blogs, rather than just their focus on local or other issues.
My collection of Berkshire-based blogs is having a remarkable effect on the political debate across the county as it provides a wider range of democratic feedback to raise and express the level of feeling on particular issues as well as giving an entree into the dividing lines across which people are discoursing.
I’m sure other areas around the country would also benefit from the scrutiny an increased level of connectedness enables, so I’m wondering whether Wikio can or is likely to begin more specific geographical categorisation.
There are a range of local networks which are developing on an ad hoc basis, but it’s certain we would all benefit from a centralised support hub such as Wikio provides.
It wouldn’t be too much to include a location tab on the submission form – any thoughts?
