MoD is going about saving money in the wrong way. There’s plenty in energy efficiency (I’m thinking in terms of petroleum products for heating, power and vehicle movements in Afghanistan) and if we start generating more power in country, rather than trucking it in, we could save a fortune.
I don’t know what the figure is for the UK, but the US is spending on the order of US$3m per day on fuel movements. By comparison, it costs US$1m a day to keep a Nimitz-class carrier at sea.
For most of my working life (and that included some years in the Public Sector), I never recieved a bonus, so why is it that suddenly everyone seems to have to have a bonus? Some have said that as pension contributions are based on salary, excluding bonus, it’s a way of paying more to keep staff happy without the extra pension contribution.
