Googlebombing Youtube: A World without Libel Lawyers

From Tim Ireland over at Bloggerheads:

[Note - A Googlebomb is something that (a) typically involves Google, and (b) making something that has no textual relevance to a keyword or keywords respond to that query regardless of this by external influence (typically, linking to a target page using those same keywords).]

I found out recently, quite by accident, that it is possible to Googlebomb YouTube.

Syndication and/or the reputation/maturity of bloggerheads.com may be a factor here, but from where I’m sitting only a single link in a single post is needed.

I’m game for a laugh, and I offer pre-emptive apologies to any readers from the legal profession.

The Wardman Wire has been around for a shorter time than Bloggerheads (2 years vs 6-7), but has roughly the same number of articles (~2500 vs ~2200). I went looking for a Youtube clip to experiment with, and I came up with one that is an ideal third-party advert for the Carter-Ruck firm of Libel Lawyers.

Let me add two notes:

If you do an excerpt-only (i.e., summary) RSS feed, put the link there – which will give it weight when your articles are syndicated.

The reason this may be effective is that – even though you may be linking to a popular video – you are doing so for a less popular search term, which makes it easier to hit a high result. Tim’s original link to the “Ninja Cat Fail” video for the phrase “Derek Draper” may have worked because “Derek Draper” is not yet a competitive term. If he tried it for a competitive term such as “Bill Gates” I would expect that to work less well (go on someone, prove me wrong).

The links in this article will automatically appear on between several aggregator sites I run.

Note: I’ve applied the nofollow attribute to the other links in this article so that the “Google Juice” goes solely to the link to Youtube, but I’ve done nothing else to “help” this article.
