MPs who support full transparency on Expenses: Roll of Honour

q-photo-lots-of-hatsIn 2008 a High Court decision granted full access (to receipt level) for goods and services purchased by MPs paid for by the taxpayer.

Since then there have been repeated attempts to circumscribe this access by a series of political manoeuvres and ambushes in Parliament. The latest was the change proposed on 16th January to exempt MPs and Peers from some provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, and to replace full disclosure with “category summary totals”.

This latest move has been – apparently – withdrawn. An increasing number of MPs have come out definitively in support of full disclosure, even in the face of a Three-Line Whip.

This post is a solemn Tip of the Hat (Photo Credit: specialkrb) to all those MPs who have taken this stand. To go on the list I need to see a statement of support for each MP, and if that statement is on the Internet, I’ll be delighted to link to it. I’m counting signing the Early Day Motion no 492 as sufficient to appear on this list. The motion was put down by Jo Swinson MP.

As James Graham comments:

Jo Swinson tabled the anti FOI(P)O EDM, issued one of the first press releases against it and contininued campaigning against it remotely while suffering from a nut allergy in Cameroon.

Add your MP by adding a comment. Ideally include name, constituency, party, and source the statement (e.g., letter to <constituent>). MPs marked * signed the EDM.

[Update: 23/1/2009. There are now 74 names on the EDM - mainly Lib Dems catching up with their admin rather than Bandwagon Jumpers. I'll update when I have a moment. These MPs are flagged as Batch 2, and are those who seem to have signed the motion after the debate.]

  1. George Galloway too (Respect, Bethnal Green and Bow) – whatever you might think of him, he’s at least sound on this issue.

Can’t link directly to it but he has made a public statement on his website – search for ‘expenses’ on http://www.georgegalloway.com

In his reply to constituents on the topic, he said that he supported full disclosure. He also mentioned his support for the Free Our Bills campaign.

  2. Thanks Anna.

    That’s great. Added.

  3. Gwyn Prosser (Labour, Dover) just replied to me he is in favour and have uploaded the reply to flickr

Matt Wardman´s last blog post..Advertising On the Wardman Wire

  5. Credit where it’s due: Jo Swinson tabled the anti FOI(P)O EDM, issued one of the first press releases against it and contininued campaigning against it remotely while suffering from a nut allergy in Cameroon. I think she deserves more than an asterisk beside her name.

James Graham´s last blog post..Kawczynski is a disgrace

  6. James.

    Added. Thanks.

  7. John Greenway (Con, Rydale) replied by post to a TWFY email to confirm he’s against the order, and “I can confirm I have always submitted receipts for all of my expense claims since I was elected… whether or not these were strictly necessary under the rules.”

  8. @tim Thanks for the clarification. Can you confirm whether he supports making it all available for inspection?

  9. The catholic Church of mumbai is not transparent. My Church of Nativity of Lord has collected cores of rupees from public to buy land and building >The parish priest refuses to give account. The promoter of fund had assured transparency in meeting before starting fund but today after collecting fund he says;go do what you want we will not give account. This Church is in Mumbai, kandivali east.
Secondly we collect community fund by asking one percent from each earning member but no account given .
For transparency we have faith in President Obama and not on our own catholic leadersWe preach one thing and behave opposite. The leadrers who preach should practice what he preaces and then give sermons. The example in catholics are Fransicain priest,I ask secular priest to follow their examples .The arch bishop of mumbai should transfer each and every priest after three years out of mumbai to learn how to live in difficulty and poor life

  10. What are these MPs actually doing by way of walking the talk Matt? Which MPs have actually made “full disclosures” or even “full-er disclosures” voluntarily or otherwise? And is Paul Rowen MP not on this list by an error? If so whose? He says he’s pro disclosure but I’m not sure his books will ever be an open door.

  11. Cheers Chris

Nominally MPs who have come out publicly for disclosure to receipt level, including those who signed the EDM. Admittedly probably not exhaustive but the best I could do.

Intended as a mechanism where they can be reminded next time round, in case they try to back off.

If someone is not on here, then I haven’t heard that they made anys statement. I started putting times on to give a bit of an indication in case any joined the bandwagon after the proposal
    was withdrawn.

  12. PS I note that a final batch signed the EDM 492 after I did my second update after the debate and withdrawal of the proposal. Will add batch 3.
