Imams’ Response to Physical and Sexual abuse of Women: Radio 4 Today Item

There was a short item on the Radio 4 Today Programme this morning about the response by some Imams to reports/allegations of sexual and physical abuse withing the Islamic community. Here is the audio snippet (6 minutes):

There has been some work in this area, notably by the UK Muslim Parliament (which is a reformed organisation from the one that was campaigning under the leadership of Dr Kalim Siddiqui for a “separate Islamic legal space” back in the 1990s). It is now lead by Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui (no relation), and takes a less confrontational approach.

They were working on a project looking at Child Protection in Faith Based Environments (PDF) more than a year ago, which is worth a look.
