Reform at the Conservative Party conference Part 3

Lots happening here today, with the conference hall abuzz after an emergency speech on the economic crisis by David Cameron. Mr Cameron promised that he would set an example to US Congressmen by supporting Gordon Brown’s legislation.

Taking a moment of respite from the country’s economic woes, the partying was contining at full force last night. The Reform team were at the Lanson reception and a number of senior Tory figures popped in, including John Redwood and Michael Fallon.

Meanwhile our fringe events continue apace, with our event on welfare reform generating queues outside the door and an impromptu “one in, one out” policy - not sure if this was due to the attraction of Chris Grayling or the superiority of the food in the Hyatt! There was a very productive discussion, with the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary addressing a number of issues including generational problems, worklessness, education, addiction and family breakdown.

This morning was maybe the best attended breakfast event ever, with Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley discussing a “marketplace in information” to empower people within the NHS. Mr Lansley said that despite the economic crisis, fringe discussions are what make Party Conference so important, where there can be real debate over ideas - a sentiment backed up by Nick Bosanquet, Reform Consultant Director, who said this is the most positive and exciting party conference he’s been to in many years.

More tonight, with Alan Duncan and David Ruffley speaking at events on the economy and crime, respectively - full details here.
