My Name is Dave Walker: Posts on the Cease and Desist notice

This entry is part 2 of 10 in the series Cease and Desist Notice on Dave Walker

This post is a straightforward list of blogs and websites posting about the legal threat made against cartoonist Dave Walker by Mark Brewer to force him to take down his reporting and comment about the SPCK bookshop chain’s takeover and management by the Society of Saint Stephen the Great (SSG). I followed the story, and my view is that Dave has been careful almost to a fault to stay the right side of the “defamation” line.

But this list is not primarily about taking a view of the SPCK/SSG “affair”; it is about the right to discuss it in public and not have anyone try and close down debate by having (or claiming to have) access to a bigger legal bludgeon. The list is articles I am aware of that have been posted; they are listed in the order I found them.

[Update 27/7/2008: I have separated the articles into sites expressly "supporting" Dave and sites "reporting" the story. I have only included sites "supporting" are in the downloaded list, to discourage attempts to insert spam links here, and also so that any media sites that start covering the story will be easier to find.]

If you would like to be added to it, please email me at mattwardman at gmail dot com using the subject line “My Name is Dave Walker” with the complete webaddress of the article you have posted, and who you are. Or make a comment here.

If you are able to cut and post the list into a post of your own - just once, we can collectively make sure that the matter gains more visibility. You can download the HTML source code of the list here. I’ll try and keep them in step, but this kind of thing gets untidy.
Note: You need to add the contents of the file into the source of your post - not just link to the file.

Not very long or eloquent, and the rest of my blog isn’t about religion, mostly covering academic psychology.
But I have to blog under a pseudonym or I *will* be sued for annoying people with more money than me, and I’m a long-standing fan of Cartoon Church. Hope this can help a bit. Bringing in lawyers just shows that you’ve run out of convincing arguments.

  6. Have a look at a comment on my blog by squiggle jones. He/She posted on my post about the Brewers challenged in court. Seems like Mark Brewer is running for political office. Maybe I should say it seems like Mark Brewer is allegedly alligned with polical folk. The post shows links to a newspaper in Houston.

  15. Just to clarify Matt,
Mr Brewer is not running for political office - he ran for political office in 2000.

There is a Mark Brewer who is the current Michigan Democratic party Chair, this is not the Mark Brewer referred to or the one in the Houston postings asingleblog references.

J(ohn). Mark Brewer (Republican) ran in the 2000 campaign to be the 7th District (TX) state representative in the House of Representatives (Congress).
You will note from this link, by the names of his supporters/contributors and other details, that it is the same Mark Brewer as involved in the current discussions:
    http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/campaigns/john_mark_brewer.asp?cycle=00

I just wanted to clear that up a little.
By the way I have used one of your excellent Blog Buttons on my site and pointed it towards Ministry’s site. Hope that is ok - oh and I included a rather long Edmund Burke quote as it seemed rather fitting, especially as Burke was a proponent of the colonies independence and all!

  21. I would also suggest (and have blogged) asking questions of the SPCK charity trustees, who seem to be in hiding on all stories that follow their debacle of handing their chain over to the Brewers? They could, I think, be offering Dave some support.

  23. Matt, I found this site while looking for something else:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20021014223915/brewer2000.com/journal.html
There is nothing I like better than a bit of satire or irony and so i give to you this quote from Mark Brewers own site from 2000:
‘But still, almost nothing in “the news.” Thank goodness that we have this one, last bastion of free speech– the Internet. The internet, in particular, is the only truly free “press” we still have.’
Lovely irony there for you! The picture gallery makes for good viewing too.
Given what some have been doing recently and the responses they have been getting here is another gem from the site:
‘ There are many ways to get involved in the fight for freedom. …
    I would like to…
    Make a financial contribution
    Sign a fundraising letter
    Write letters to the editor
E-mail messages to editors and opinion leaders’
there really are some other excellent quotes from these pages:
    http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.brewer2000.com
I like this one from the old Brewer&Pritchard site:
‘Like other business people, lawyers exist in a competitive world. They must be willing to withstand the scrutiny of those whom they serve and those whom they seek to serve.’ http://web.archive.org/web/20001204153800/www.bplaw.com/

  37. I don’t care much about the anglican vs orthodoxy thread, but I do live close to the splendid grade I hall-church that used to be the SPCK headquarters, so I noted there had been a fabulous property development opportunity taken advantage of. And a rather grim jet-trash party-space created. Was that before or after the takeover?

  38. I don’t see an Anglican vs Orthodoxy thread - since I don’t think that the Society of Saint Stephen the Great represents Orthodoxy.

I’d describe it more as an Open vs Closed mind thread, that happens to have crystallised in the fight for survival of a struggling chain of bookshops where the Anglican owners chose the wrong rescue answer, and lots of people got shafted in the ensuing debacle.

I’ll ask “somebody who knows” to comment on your question.

    Thanks for the Comment

    Matt

  39. If you mean the Holy Trinity Church, Marylebone Road (NW1 4DU) then this was the headquarters for the SPCK until about 2003, at which point they relocated to offices in Causton Street.
The Bookshop that had been based at Holy Trinity Church relocated to Tufton Street slightly before the rest of the SPCK relocated, Publishing and the then SPCK World Wide(-which was given over to Feed The Minds at about the time as the move to Causton Street).
All of this happened long in advance of the changeover of the Bookshops to SSG which happened in late 2006.
