Perfect use for CCTV: watch Oink the pig-buffalo

20080608-buffalo-oink-darley-abbeyI thought I should report this one:

Hi-tech help has been offered to the owner of a water buffalo at the centre of a series of attacks.

The buffalo, called Oink, weighs more than a tonne and has been the victim of harassment and injury on land in Darley Abbey village in Derbyshire.

Stones and bricks have been thrown at him, hay set on fire and washing up liquid put in his water.

Local resident David Lakin has donated a CCTV system to keep an eye on Oink and deter any other attacks.

Mr Lakin installed the cameras and some lights and hopes it will offer the animal some peace.

That leaves one question. A buffalo called Oink?

And here’s the answer:

Mr Lakin has known Oink for some time and explained his name comes from a noise the buffalo makes, apparently a result of being kept in the same field as pigs.

There’s more about buffalos being gentle, one-ton giants and how it would awful if Oink lost his temper with those throwing bricks at him. Personally I would love him to lose his temper in those circumstances and chase the miscreants into the local duckpond or slurry pit; presumably a buffalo doesn’t have a legal duty of care towards those throwing bricks at it.

I wonder what social workers or a sociologist would make of this one if Oink was a child? After all, pigs are often used as a model for humans in experiments (OK, drug and gunshot experiments). And do you suppose the Animal Protection people and PITA are going after the pig-farmer for “failure to provide a culturally appropriate environment for a buffalo”? Can Oink be happy if he is .. er .. oink-ing? Worse, does he even know that this is happening?

There are a lot of questions to be answered, and I demand a independent enquiry.

The pigs are may be making a different noise as well - probably “phew”.

  1. If Oink has been attacked? (which there is some doubt to the claims) as there has been no proof shown to the public no pictures of any injuries in the press or on TV news. Just the words of **** **** and everyone now is donating there money to keep Oink safe and so far seems no money raised has been spent on Oinks safety. His CCTV was donated a long with his new holding pen according to Oinks web site. But still will all this keep Oink safe? all the money in china could not keep Oink safe where he is at Darley abbey Derby. Oink should be moved if he has been attacked by thugs for his own safety, not all this raising money for the owner to put value to her field which will happen with a new holding pen and new fencing which they are also claiming for on the web site. What will happen to the money DONATED when all the so called safety equipment is in place?. Bill

[Matt: Sorry - but that criticism of a named individual who is not mentioned in the article is a bit sharp. But if you put that on your own site I'll allow a link in the comment]

  2. Bill’s comments above are the work of operation NO OINK.
Please see link here:Oink’s facebook group

  3. What allegations there is no allegation what are you talking about.

  4. Hi Bill. I’m referring to:

I’ve just blanked out the name, You are welcome to post it on your own site and drop a link.

  5. Hi Matt there is no allegation you are talking about the name I mentioned in my comment. OK take you point will not happen again Regards Bill

  6. @Bill:

Thanks Bill - I’ll also adjust my wording to sound less harsh.

  7. Bill - shut up. You’re the only person I know that doesn’t love me. Oiiiiiiiiiink!

  8. I think Bill (and his other alisases) is just the same kind of stupid yob who thought it funny to throw bricks at a defenceless animal.
Why should Oink be moved when he’s perfectly happy where he is? Have you not read the reason WHY he hasnt previously been moved?

… and yes money has been spent, on CCTV etc.

Stop making a fool of yourself “Bill” and get a life.
Did you donate money? No? Then stop complaining.

  9. Where we choose to send our money is our affair. It’s called freedom of choice. One also has to make a judgement about integrity. It all comes down to trust. I am perfectly happy to send a donation. I trust them, and it’s my money, so keep you opinions to yourself. Nobody is asking you to donate. I donate to a great many charities, mainly anomal ones. Humans, generally ar not worth my money, and you certainly have convinced me of that.
    What charities do you support?

  10. Agreed there Hazel.
Animals are defenceless and cannot help themselves the way we can help them.
Bill is just a bitter sad old man/woman with a bee in his/her bonnet… perhaps we SHOULD donate money to this person to buy them some morals and a life.

  11. >perhaps we SHOULD donate money to this person to buy them some morals and a life.

    I hope you can’t buy morals !

    Matt

  12. I wasnt being literal of course :)

  13. @Natalie: Heh.
