This weeks Think Tank Roundup…

As promised last week I’ve ditched the classification into left & right and decided to break things down slightly differently into three sections - I’ll highlight any formal reports and publications issued, articles / briefings or blogposts from their own sites or in the MSM and finally public events or debates that might be of interest. If there are any significant personnel changes among the major players I’ll highlight those as well.

Reports & Publications…

Articles, briefings and blogs…

Events & Meetings…

As always please flag anything worthy I might have missed….

  1. “In Europe and worldwide, political systems are facing a crisis of disaffection and disengagement. How we deal with this crisis will determine the fate of liberal democratic systems everywhere, and of the European Union in particular.”

That “we” (not meaning ordinary people like me) is, perhaps, the problem, as well as the notion that the EU is a “liberal democratic system”. The voice of the individual is lost in the growing scale of things. “How we deal with this crisis” will likely be a series of cons and fudges designed to disguise the weakening of the power of the franchise. And I think that ultimately, those stratagems will fail.

  2. Thanks for the visit and comment, Sackerson.

    Where to start?

I’d start at the bottom by making local units small enough that we can relate to them, and making local councils responsible for raising some more of the revenue.

If most households - within the overall tax burden - has £5k not £1-2k going to the local authority, there would be extra interest. Perhaps.

  3. OK, though localised democracy could be a way of distracting us from the centralisation of decision-making in the biggest matters. We get to say where you live, you get to choose the colour of your front door, as it were.
