Putting the Fun into Funding Scandals. Or not.
The “MPs, MEPs and sundry expenses declared to be payable by the taxpayer”-imbroglio is going to get messy, and last quite a long time as the best part of a million receipts come into the public domain.
There’s going to be a lot of “them” bashing, but I think everyone who is not using the system wants to end up with a fully transparent and accountable set of rules. Everyone inside the system seems to want transparency in theory, but with a certain reluctance to take the pain.
As far as I am concerned, everything should be available for inspection, and politicians expenses should operate on as close a basis as possible to that used for the rest of the country - that way they will receive direct experience of regulations introduced, which will help create an incentive for high quality systems.
I’m sure there was a smell when Heracles cleared the .. er .. manure (let’s go all Margo in the terminology) out of the Augean Stables. Let’s have it all out in the stableyard as quickly as possible, so that the dungpile will lose its smell in a couple of years, and we can move on after putting proper standards in place.
