The Corpse of Charlotte Green: Radio 4 Today

This morning Charlotte Green totally lost it on Today on Radio 4, after reading out a short piece about an 1860 recording of a human voice on smoky paper (which sounded like Just William playing his comb). Unfortunately she giggled through an obituary of Abby Mann. Here’s the clip.

James Naughtie came to the rescue - sort of.

As Wikipedia puts it:

On 28 March 2008 while reading the 8:00am Today programme news, Green was reduced to a fit of uncontrollable giggling as she announced the discovery of the world’s first sound recording of the human voice (an excerpt from the French folksong Au Clair de la Lune recorded on 9 April 1860). It was later reported by her colleague Eddie Mair that the reason for her lapse was due to an unnamed person in the studio whispering to her that the recording sounded ‘like a bee in a bottle’.

  1. Personally, I think John ‘Boggy’ Marsh’s attack of the giggles back in 2006 when reading the news is much more amusing. If only because the story is better!
