All hyperlinks are now underlined on the Wardman Wire

I had a couple of people who got lost looking for links yesterday (including the one I had left out by mistake), so I have swallowed the bitter design medicine and started underlining all the links. I don’t like the appearance myself, but ease-of-use comes first.

I may make the underlinings slightly less intrusive by making them dotted (compare with the UK edition), and leaving underlinings of links on menus and in the sidebar - but I hope that you find that navigation is now easier (if less beautiful).

  1. Yeah, blog designs can be a difficult balance of usability and aesthetics. Maybe you can try making the links inside posts a different color than the menu so there is more distinction between the two and hopefully easier to tell that they are links.

  2. Matt,

I wasn’t complaining, the links were not working, so I thought you would want to know.

I am quite happy with your normal ‘clean’ look and the subtle colour difference of the links.

    STB.

ps I almost underlined this comment!

  3. Sorry if it sounded as if you were the cause .

I’ve been thinking about it for a bit - it is something that has happened occasionally, and I’m now getting a lot of “one-off” visitors, so I need to stick to the web convention a bit more closely.

I think a half-weight dotted underlining will be better in the body text for links - I just need to do some grubbing around in the compost heap that is my stylesheet to turn off all the others.

  4. It is less pretty, but certainly easier to use!

  5. I subscribe to your RSS feed but…. waaaaagh! No! The underlining looks bad. It looked better before. Put in an accessibility button with a CSS script changer if you must - have a look at the CSS Zen Garden.

I’ll look at that - but you’ll have to put up with this for a few days. Sorry.

    btw - Twittering headlines now.
