Clarkson the Biter is Bitten
I’m not a virulent Clarkson-hater, but I find this quite amusing:
TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson has lost money after publishing his bank details in his newspaper column.
The Top Gear host revealed his account numbers after rubbishing the furore over the loss of 25 million people’s personal details on two computer discs.
He wanted to prove the story was a fuss about nothing.
But Clarkson admitted he was “wrong” after he discovered a reader had used the details to create a £500 direct debit to the charity Diabetes UK.
Clarkson published details of his Barclays account in the Sun newspaper, including his account number and sort code. He even told people how to find out his address.
I will become a virulent Clarkson-hater if it turns out that he has demanded the money back.
I also look forward to Mr C putting his considerable weight behind the various campaigns to protect our data.

I like Clarkson, and I think it’s hilarious. He set himself up for a fall!
He certainly shouldn’t ask for the money back, and I very much doubt that he will.
Great mind think alike and all that…
Above all the issues about Jezza being a tad naive and all that, I think it does raise a fundamental issue about how insecure electronic banking is.
I’m presuming that the ‘fake’ direct debit was set up online. In the old days, it would have required a signature - so the bank should have easily spotted a fradulent one.
Without that papertrail, things are nowhere near as safe…
