Where should the Liberal Democrats go next?
I’ll keep this brief.
For the country I’d like to see a reassertion of Classical Liberalism, combined with a genuine localism. If you like, a Leftish small-L Libertarianism. I’m not sure whether this would be good or bad for the Tories and/or Labour, however.
There are a couple of corollories of that:
- A genuine localism, which implies the need to cauterise the illiberal “Big Brother” tendencies we see from time to time in the Liberal Democrats - especially the top-down environmental and EU-centric “thou shalt” reflex.
- The other implication of a genuine localism is that we must accept local variation, and that is going to mean and end to all If you believe in “Power to the Local Community“, then variation and “Postcode Lotteries” (or Postcode Democracies - 15 or so paras down) are just what happen (i.e., nothing to whinge about unless it is structural).
OK. That’s me done on the Lib Dem leadership contest. I’ll not be doing the nitty gritty grindy bits (try Norfolk Blogger or James Graham! (I say we should all give James an honourary exclamation mark), but may dip in from time to time.
