Manchester Cathedral vs Sony Battle: Update 2

20070612-resistance-fall-of-man-screenshotThere have been a few postings appearing around the Internet. There a lot of comments from people who don’t know English law. I’ll try and do a full roundup later on today.

For now, however, I’ll just add a few quick points and a few comments.

Good Coverage

TwoThree good articles following up on some of my points

The best headline, especially for afficionados of The Ship of Fools’ Virtual Church (review) - where churchwardens “Smite” troublemakers to evict them - is:

Coverage that Misses the Point

And a Comedy Interlude

20070612-wood-pigeonAccording to Ruth Gledhill, there are pigeon problems at Norwich:

Meanwhile, Pigeon Campaigns UK have written in protest to all English cathedrals about the shooting with a real gun of a real live pigeon in full view of diners in the refectory of Norwich cathedral. Hilarious, except I guess for the pigeon.

As they say in their letter:

‘Dear Sir/Madam,

‘As you are so keen to promote your Cathedral and raise a ’substantial donation’ from Sony, we would formally request that you confirm in writing whether you shoot pigeons (or any other wildlife) at your Cathedral please?

‘Unfortunately as we saw only last week, Norwich Cathedral was recently caught shooting pigeons; you can therefore understand our concerns. This made the headlines in the Norwich Evening News on Saturday.”

‘In the Very Reverend Rogers Govender’s words: “We are shocked to see a place of learning, prayer and heritage being presented to the youth market as a location where guns can be fired.” If that is the case, members of the public need to be assured that guns are not being fired at Manchester Cathedral.

‘We look forward to hearing from you by return.

‘Sincerely

‘John Davison
Pigeon Campaigns UK’

“Campaigning for the compassionate treatment of all avian wildlife in the UK”

20070612-wood-pigeon-pieIt seems to me that shooting pigeons for the table is entirely appropriate, entirely compassionate, and entirely tasty.

Leaving aside the general “Rats with Wings” view of pigeons, and my preference for pigeons to be kept in a pie rather than a cathedral, I’m tempted to suggest the following solutions to deal with concerns of the Pigeon People:

  1. Offer to lend them a ladder and a butterfly net and let them get on with it.
  2. Follow the advice of the Duke of Wellington: Sparrowhawks Ma’am.

Here’s hoping that Norwich Cathedral have the nouse to offer “home grown pigeon pie” on their Refectory menu. I wonder if there is a pigeon roof boss at Norwich Cathedral.

Comparison of Playstation Game “Virtual Cathedral ” and the Real Thing

This screenshot is taken from the game:

Note that the two images are in the are taken from opposite directions. The one above is looking away from the altar; the one below looking up the nave.

On a purely technical level, the reproduction is very good.

Query

Of anyone can send me a screenshot of any stained glass windows from the game, I would be interested.

I think that will do for now.

  1. Yes…I’m the guy who wrote the blog entitled “Church of England Extorts Sony?” The one that you thought “missed the point”.
First of all you need to work on your reading comprehension. The information on the issues at hand were paraphrased from two different articles:

    #1 BBC News online Saturday, 9 June 2007, 17:32 GMT 18:32 UK
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manchester/6736809.stm

#2 GameSpot UK Posted Jun 11, 2007 12:46 pm GMT By Emma Boyes
    http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/story.php?sid=6172294&part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6172294

The bottom line point in these two articles was that C of E is threatening to sue Sony because they used the image of the interior of the Manchester Cathedral in one of their games without getting permission from the C of E. Obviously if they (Sony and Insomniac Games the designer and publisher) had gotten the proper clearance from the C of E there would be no issue.
My first point, my dear man, is that some one messed up at Sony, by not making sure of the legalities of using the image of the interior of Manchester Cathedral in their game. There is an entire department at this giant corporation (Sony) whose sole responsibility is to get the proper clearance in situations like these. Whether in the UK, Tokyo or Atlantis, the laws are addressed by this department and it is responsible for all details.
My second point was that the Church wants retribution for the discrimination of their glorious cathedral (and they will gladly sue to get money and publicity for their cause). I think that this is classic hypocrisy on the church’s part, being that they teach forgiveness and good will for all mankind. What a crock of haggis!
My third point is the Church and Mothers Against Violence blame the rise of gun violence in Manchester on violent video games. I am from the USA, and this same phenomena of the Church, the Government and some ignorant group of political lobbyists, banding together to blame their violence problems on the entertainment industry. What they need to do is take a good look at the problem of poor parenting and the breakdown of the nuclear family.
And finally…You’re a DORK (Mr. Bean). My blog is a mix of comedy and fact. Now judging from your demeanor you have no sense of humor. It must have been removed at birth. My suggestion is to hit a popular local pub…Have a couple of pints and try to talk to a nice female. You may get lucky and have some fun and grow back your sense of humor. Oh…and you should move out of your Mum’s house…your gettin’ to old to be livin’ with her. By the way, love the blog ; )
