Doughty Street Directory

q-logo-18doughty-streetI’ve posted indices to a couple of 18 Doughty Street programmes recently. The idea is to provide more direct links to the programmes than are available on the website. This article is the “home page” for the directory.

If you want to link to this directory, this article is the place to link to.

George Bush Video Archive: Introducing politicalvideo.org

      20070630-jay-dedmanGeorge Bush Video Archive

      Meet politicalvideo.org

The Whitehouse has a huge amount of video available on its website.

Jay Dedman and others have built the George Bush Video Archive. It stores no less than 1695 videos and 495 hours of video.

And it has all been done without a cent of public funds - voluntarily.

      20070630-political-video

One thing the USA has got right is that all national and state government publications are in the public domain by definition:

Any documents produced by local, state and federal government are by law in the public domain (after all, we Americans paid for them). And almost any other video clip used in a critical context falls under fair use. But video from sources like the White House site is in RealVideo format — making it a chore to save locally and even harder to work with in editing.

The amount of video available is also staggering, so Shawn Van Every and Eric Zimmerman helped out by automating the site scraping, downloading, transcoding and uploading process. The video on the site is now avaible in Quicktime format, making it easier for users to edit and republish.

Importantly, Politicalvideo.org is also archiving the related transcripts, making it much easier to scan and search for specific phrases. The team has archived over 500 hours of video total dating back to 2001, all of which should be uploaded and available by Wednesday.

Why are the British so Precious?

Now, the big question. Why are the British Government and the Westminster (and other) British Parliaments so defensive (read “anal”) about video recorded in our National Parliament. The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish regional Parliaments are just as bad. Here are some examples:

Climate Change come Home to Roost

Iain Dale reports on a new Lib Dem policy to force the environmental upgrade of housing.

This has got to be a good thing if done competently. In fact, Mrs Thatcher should have tackled it twenty-five years ago.

        The idea is that:

This policy at least has the merit that you can see it coming. You know that you will be forking out the extra cash when you want to make an alteration or move house - so it can be budgeted and planned for, and prices adjusted accordingly.

        for in the extensionpricing

There are a doubtless few “gotchas” and “elephant traps” that are not obvious from the information released so far. I’ve spotted one already. As quoted by Iain:

“A typical cost of refurbishment would range from £5,000 to £10,000, though
some properties with exceptional features, particularly among those built before
        1914, could cost more.” (p.10)

“Some properties could cost more among those built before 1914″ looks fishy to me. If you check the Social Trends data, you will see that fully 1 in 5 properties - that’s almost 5 million - were built before 1919.

That is a very large amount of “some properties”.

The Tony Blair Departure Video Festival Episode 5

This is an the 5th installment of an exhibition of video clips produced to celebrate mark Tony Blair’s departure.

          The Truth about Facebook

Spotted on the comments on Jeff Jarvis’s Blog, Buzz Machine,

I can’t help but think that Facebook is like a big drunken game of strip poker that seems like fun at the time, but which immediately leads to regrets about revealing too much too quickly to people you hardly know.

            Quite.

            Advertising on the Wardman Wire

Advertise on the Wardman WireToday I have put up our Advertising page, with details of how you may sponsor this site.

The idea is to both defray expenses, which (lets be up front here) are pretty minimal, but also to provide me with a little income for the time spent on the site (which is substantial).

              Sponsorship

I’m doing a package involving direct sponsorship - initially for £20 a month for the following elements:

              • 125×125 sidebar badge.
              • A monthly “commercial break” article (identified as such) about the advertiser’s product or service.
              • Am initial article describing and reviewing the advertiser’s service.

There is a “premium” package for the position at the top-right costing £30 per month.

Both of these have a “3 months for 2″ offer, with the aim of starting things rolling.

              Traffic

The site is currently drawing around 600 unique visitors a day and will generate around 57,000 page impressions in June. That last figure is from the server and does not exclude search engine spiders. By the same token it does not include people who looked at the site using, e.g., the Google cache or other off site copy.

There should be a detailed monthly statistics report this weekend.

              Profile

This is my brief profile of the blog:

The Wardman Wire is a fast moving political blog, which is updated 3-5 times per day. It focuses on the following topics:

              * Reporting and commentary on UK Politics.
              * The relation of politics and technology.
              * The use of new media in local and national politics.

We have a particular interest in encouraging the use of blogs in political communication.

              Wrapping-Up

There is more detail about the editorial mix and audience on the advertising page, and you can email me via the contact page.

Putting Paris Hilton in her Place

                Found via Mt Eugenides.

It looks like a setup to me, but puts Paris Hilton, celebrity con-woman, in her proper place.
