Respect for Janet Street Porter: Bring back Dobbin as Dinner
I took a thorough potshot at Janet Street-Porter, when she took exposed her inability to argue logically from published data in her Independent column.
I’m delighted to report that more recently she has stuck her brass neck out in a much more useful direction: extolling the virtues of Dobbin as Dinner. That is, it is time to put horses on the menu:
My report - broadcast last Tuesday - focused on horses which have been bred to be eaten, fed an organic diet, and slaughtered using methods which conform to strict EU guidelines. According to French animal welfare charities, there is no evidence of a single case of a horse being mistreated during the slaughtering process.
In France, horse is the only red meat which has increased in popularity recently, and the government has relaxed the regulations which meant it had to be sold in specialist butchers. Now it can be sold in supermarkets, and sales have soared. Horsemeat is 50 per cent leaner than beef, high in protein and 10 times richer in Omega-3. Gram for gram it is richer in iron than spinach, high in B12, rich in zinc, and very low in saturated fat.
She even enlisted Gordon Ramsay in her trial, and the predictable prattlers of Peta staged a publicity stunt to accuse her of staging a publicity stunt. The sign reads “Just say neigh. Meat stinks. Go veg.”
Unfortunately for Peta and Ms Singh, meat does not stink. It is delicious and nourishing - including horse.
I’ve long thought that most animal rights protesters are probably less equipped in the intelligence department than the creatures they so vociferously seek to protect, and events of the past few days have certainly proved me correct.
Quite.
Ramsay commented that horse meat tastes “quite gamey” and is packed with protein. Anita Singh, of Peta Europe, accused the chef of mounting a ratings-grabbing “gimmick”.
However, since Peta is one huge walking, talking, publicity stunt, Ms Singh - like Peta - thoroughly deserves to be ignored.
So, a big round of applause for Janet Street-Porter on this occasion. And another big round of applause for Noshing on Neddy - properly raised of course.
