Fires out on Cutty Sark

[7:15am GMT]

I am hearing reports that the Fires are virtually now out on the Cutty Sark and that the damage is less than initially reported.

It looks as if the boat will be largely salvageable - at least in the way that the National Trust Uppark Property was restored after a major fire.

These are paraphrased quotes from a radio interview with Chris Livett, the Chairman of the Cutty Sark Trust, who was at the scene.

The ship was 90% on fire.

Fortunately 50% of the planking was not on site.

There are pockets of charred planking, but it does not look as bada as first envisaged.

Three decks are probably salvageable.

There is nothing movable on board, as these had been taken off as part of a conservation project.

There is now significantly more work to do than would have been the case.

It will be the old ship.

It looks as if the London Fire Brigade have done a superb job.
